Flexible and printed electronics has been commercialized during the past decade and is now securing its position alongside traditional electronics. This was allowed due to availability of novel flexible conductors and semiconductors. The unique feature of flexibility, together by the ability of low cost fabrication using printing equipment, afforded the emerging of commercial products usually to first appear at professional tech shows such as the Consumer Electronics Shows (CES) followed by full commercialization such as Samsung’s flexible display and AMOLED mobile phone screens as well as folding mobile phones and wearable electronics released by Royole and others. Soon enough we may be carrying electronic paper that can be rolled like conventional newspapers, except that electronic paper will always provide the latest news. The growing interest in wearable electronic devices and mobile sensors for consumer products, healthcare and military applications suggests the trend is expected to continue.
The new products mentioned above became possible due to development of novel conductors and semiconductors. PEDOT-PSS is one of these materials. It is a fully organic polymer, does not contain any metals, yet it is electrically conductive. Moreover, this electrically conductive material is supplied as dispersion/ solution in water and can be applied very similarly to conventional paint or ink.
